Jo Ann Phlegar Photograph Collection, 1925-1933 and undated. KC Manuscript Collection 537. Archives of the City of Kingsport, Tennessee.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The collection contains 6 photographs. One photograph was taken of the Calhoun Home that was destroyed in the March 14, 1933 Cherry Hill Tornado in Kingsport. The tornado caused the deaths of eight people. The Red Cross and the Salvation Army established relief stations to handle the emergency, and local physicians worked through the night and following day to help those hurt by the storm. Tennessee’s State Legislature provided $10,000 in aid to the victims. Two photographs are of the bridge and Speers Ferry on the Clinch River. The three remaining photographs were taken at Natural Tunnel State Park.
