BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Dr. Elery Lay (1915-1991) was well known for his significant accomplishments as an educator, government official, and as an author of both historical fiction and non-fiction.  He served as Kingsport’s Vice-Mayor and was on the Board of Mayor and Alderman for a total of 12 years.

A native of Scott County, Tennessee, Dr. Lay came to SullivanCounty in 1938.  He became principal of Dobyns-BennettHigh School in 1956 serving in that post for ten years.  From 1966 to 1972 he was assistant superintendent for Kingsport City Schools.  Dr. Lay was elected to the Kingsport Board of Mayor and Alderman by one of the largest popular votes of any alderman in Kingsport’s history.  He served on the Board of Mayor and Alderman from 1969 to 1979 and was the city’s vice-mayor, 1979-1981.  Dr. Lay served in instructional and administrative capacities for Steed and BristolColleges and for NortheastStateTechnicalCollege.

Dr. Lay was a graduate of HuntsvilleHigh School, Huntsville, Tennessee.  He attended LincolnMemorialUniversity, and EastTennesseeStateUniversity earning a B. S. degree in history, English, and social studies.  He earned the M. A. degree in history and geography and an Ed.D degree in history, geography, and social studies from Peabody College of Vanderbilt.  He completed a history of the Tri-City Region, An Industrial and Commercial History of the Tri-Cities in Tennessee and four works of historical fiction (That Reek of Sin, Vantage Press, 1951; Trek to the King’s Mountain, Moore Publishing, 1976; Journey, Lay Publications, 1981; Great Tree: A Mountain Tale, Lay Publications, 1983) and one piece of historical poetry, Long Island of the Holston.

He was a member of the Kingsport Education Association where he served as president, was a member of the East Tennessee State Education Association, National Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa, Pi Gamma Mu, and made a life member of the Parent-Teacher Association.  He was a member of the Kingsport Retired Teachers Association and a past president.  His community work included Kingsport Civitan Club, where he served as past president and director, the American Legion, Boy Scout counselor, Community Aid, Community Chest Captain, Kingsport Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Kingsport Safety Council, Kingsport Law Day Chairman, Sullivan County Historical Society, Netherland Inn Society, American Association of Retired Persons, and at the time of his death he was Sullivan County Historian.  Dr. Lay was a deacon at FirstBaptistChurch and Sunday School teacher for 47 years.

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Dr. Elery A. Lay Collection consists of three series: subject files, manuscripts, and scrapbooks.  The subject files contain various newspaper clippings relating to Dr. Lay’s career, as well as notes that Lay used in the creation of his published works.  There are also photographs and mementos collected by Dr. Lay over the years.  The manuscripts are the handwritten and typed versions of Dr. Lay’s novels, as well as research notes and rough drafts of his dissertation.  Also included are two novels and a microfilm version of his dissertation.  The scrapbooks give a chronological look at Dr. Lay’s career.  There are newspaper clippings and programs from his time as principal and later assistant superintendent.  His career as alderman, professor, and writer are also chronicled in the scrapbooks with newspaper articles, letters from publishers and well-wishers, and other relevant mementos.

This series consists of subject files containing newspaper clippings, photographs, notes, programs, and mementos.  The files are arranged alphabetically.

 

Series II, Manuscripts, c.1957-1983 and undated, box 5-19.

This series contains handwritten and typed manuscripts by Dr. Elery Lay, as well as two books and a microfilm of his dissertation.  The collection is arranged in the original order.

 

Series III, Scrapbooks, 1951-1992, box 20-24.

This series consists of nine scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, correspondence, newsletters, programs, and mementos.  The scrapbooks are arranged chronologically.
